Who is Hatsune Miku?

Hatsune Miku is a voicebank for Japanese singing voice synthesizer software Vocaloid, whose voice has featured in over 100,000 songs released worldwide. She has performed sold-out 3D concerts all over the world in the form of a hologram modeled as a 16-year old girl with long, turquoise pigtails. Touted as a virtual idol, Miku and her anthropomorphism have become a global sensation with a loyal and active fan community who have created countless animations and other media featuring her.

The name of the character comes from merging the Japanese words for first (初, hatsu), sound (音, ne), and future (ミク, miku[a]), thus meaning “the first sound of the future”, referring to her position as the first of creator Crypton Future Media’s “Character Vocal Series”.

How does it work?

The Otamatone creates digital tones that you can control based on the position of your finger on the touch-sensitive fretboard. Use a switch on the back to choose an octave and slide your fingers up and down to play different notes. Open the Otamatone’s mouth with a squeeze to change the sound from a hum to an “ahh” and create a “Wah Wah” effect.
